The Port of Rijeka is situated on the Kvarner Gulf in the northern Adriatic Sea. It is one of the harbours of special international and economic significance for the Republic of Croatia, which handles the largest portion of country's imports and exports.
Rijeka is a multi-purpose port, which handles its operations in several locations. Containers, timber and conventional cargo are serviced at Sušak, bulk cargo and ro-ro are handled at Bakar, while oil terminal is placed in Omišalj. Other kinds of freight such as livestock, grain or fruit are handled in Raša – Bršica and Rijeka. Port's yearly throughput is estimated at around 9 mln tn. It is managed by the Port of Rijeka Authority.
By 2030, the harbour's capacity is planned to be expanded to 600,000 TEU with the construction of a new container terminal in Omišalj on Krk Island. A number of liner services connect Port of Rijeka with the Far East and other locations in the Mediterranean (Italy, Malta, Greece, Egypt).
Being a part of Pan-European Corridor 5, Rijeka can be easily reached by rail as well as by road. The E65 motorway provides access to the rest of Balkan Peninsula and Poland via the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
