The 28 m deep Port of Sines handles approx. 50% of LNG consumed in Portugal. With 37.6 mln tn of freight turnover in 2014, it also has a strong position among the Ibero-Atlantic harbours.
The port handles various types of cargo across five terminals. There is a liquid bulk terminal, which has six jetties and can receive tankers up to 350,000 dwt. The 15 m deep LNG terminal can receive tankers up to 225,000 m3 and has one jetty, three storage tanks with 390,000 m3 of total capacity as well as re-gasification and refueller filling plants. The Sines Multipurpose Terminal handles ro-ro and other general cargo traffic as well as dry bulk such as coal (2,000 tn per hour handling capacity) for national power plants. The 24 ha container terminal of 1.1 mln TEU per year capacity offers six Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes.
Currently, the port authority is focused on the construction of the 940 m long quay in the container terminal to increase its handling capacity up to 1.7 mln TEU with additional three Post-Panamax and one Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes as well as on the development of the port's road and rail connections with the Portuguese and Spanish hinterland.
