The Sydney-based company, an integrated port solutions provider active in 28 Australian ports, has ordered from the German port handling equipment manufacturer the LHM 550 bulk crane for its operations in the Port of Whyalla.
The new machine has a lifting capacity of 144t and a max radius of 54 m. The crane comes with a 4-rope grab and features the SmartGrip option, allowing for handling of bulk materials with a variety of densities.
According to Liebherr, the SmartGrip technology is capable of optimising the filling rate of the grab in a self-learning manner; after five lifting cycles, it teaches itself how to optimise utilisation of the grab as well as prevents overload, hence increases the handling rate and alleviates crane operator stress.
"This saves Qube a lot of hassle with grab changes, but also saves them money otherwise spent buying multiple grabs," Gordon Clark, General Manager, Liebherr Australia, commented.
The latest machinery will be the ninth mobile harbour crane Qube has ordered from Liebherr in the last five years.
