Venice is a TEN-T core port situated on the intersection of three corridors (Scan-Med, Med. Sea and Baltic-Adriatic). Together with Trieste, Koper and Rijeka it constitutes the North Adriatic Ports Association (NAPA).
There are 26 terminals in Venice of 2,045 ha area in total, providing stevedoring services for goods such as liquids, iron and steel, cereals, grains, fertlizers, animal feed, oil seeds, ores, sand, coal, as well as containers and ro-ro cargo. Venice as a top tourism destination has also a cruise passenger terminal, whilst since 2004, the port has the Motorways of Sea ro-ro and ro-pax terminal (incl. 18,000 m2 of a loading area with two railway sections). Additionally, Venice is connected to Po river, which enables transhipment of bulk (2,060 tn capacity) and containers (60 TEU) with the use of barges.
Currently, the port authority is focused on building a new 90 ha container terminal with an annual handling capacity of 1.4 mln TEU. The second big infra-project in Venice – the 20 m deep-sea offshort terminal – will be divided into two sections: the one for bulk (dry and liquid) and the another for containers (up to 20,000 TEU ships).
