The Port of Klaipėda is not only indispensable for the domestic Lithuanian market, but functions also as the main import/export hub for Belarus as well as is an important transit node for traffic to/from Russia and the CIS.
Klaipėda handled 36.4 mln tn in 2014, which is only 0.19 mln tn less than in 2011, when the port reached its best throughput result. With 450 thou. TEU, the port champions container traffic in the Baltic States. Klaipėda port's water depths - 15 m at the entrance and between 13 and 14.5 m along the navigation channel - enables it to accept 95 thou. dwt bulk carriers and 160 thou. dwt tankers.
Since December 2014, there is an unique LNG floating terminal called Independence, which has single-handedly rearranged the Lithuanian gas market. Additionally, Klaipėda has a new pax & cargo terminal operating since June 2014, having a yearly capacity of up to 5 mln tn ro-ro cargo. Currently, the port authority focuses on the construction of the outer deep-sea port of 17 m water depth.
