Established in 1811, the Port of Antwerp has grown to be the second biggest harbour in Europe in terms of cargo turnover. Situated at the upper end of the river Scheldt in Belgium, Antwerp enjoys a more inland location than any of the other North Sea ports and thus 37% of shipments is transported by barge. Its proximity to both France and Netherlands as well as a number of inland connections to other 14 European countries make Antwerp a gateway to 190 mln tn of freight.
Port of Antwerp has its activities in five types of cargo: ro-ro, dry bulk, breakbulk, liquids and containers. Each of these sectors is serviced by a range of specialized terminals and stevedores. The harbour ranked at third position among European ports regarding the amount of containers and roro handled. Moreover, it is home to the biggest petrochemical cluster on the continent.
Due to its significance, Antwerp is a port of call for over 300 liner connections to around 800 destinations. In addition, weekly feeder and shortsea services are scheduled to more than 200 locations in Europe and North Africa. The harbour is also a junction for three European rail corridors linking the North Sea region with Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea and the Alps. Furthermore, Antwerp is easily accessible by road transport by the E19, E17, E34 and E313 motorways.
