Port of Piraeus has been the harbour of Athens since the Ancient times. It is located by the Phaleron Bay on the Aegan Sea. Piraeus is the main Greek port and a centre of communication for the Greek Islands.
Apart from handling containers and cars, the Port of Piraeus puts much focus on passenger traffic. The numbers of passengers visiting the harbour each year (around 20 mln) is one of the highest in Europe. The container terminal began its operations in 2010. It is equipped with eight cranes (four SPP) and eight RMGs and has the capacity of one mln TEU. The Piraeus Port Authority Investment Plan 2012-2016 will see i.a. The expansion of cruise terminal, upgrading the container terminal's infrastructure as well as completion of port's railway network.
The Port of Piraeus provides numerous regular connections to the Aegan Islands, Turkey, UK and other Mediterranean harbours. The European E75 motorway links Piraeus with Skopje, Belgrade, Budapest and other major cities up to far northeastern Norway.
