The company reduced its workforce in Singapore from 20k to just 850, a result of severe movement restrictions put on foreign workers. Sembcorp's Sembawang Shipyard was identified as a coronavirus cluster in mid-April, 2020.
According to the group's release, the reduced workforce manages and supports only essential yard services, such as emergency response teams, facilities and utilities management, dormitory operations, medical centres and yard security. These measures apply to all of the company's yards in Singapore.
Such an aggressive reduction had to take a toll on yard activity and resulted in delays in fulfilling existing orders. The group said, that it will continue to assess the impact of the move on project schedules and reach out to customers to manage orders during the crisis.
