The Liebherr-manufactured Super Post-Panamax Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, delivered in April, are now ready to serve container ships at the Slovenian Port of Koper.
The STSes, each weighing 1,200 tn, feature a 65 m outreach, making it possible to serve 24 rows wide 20,000 TEU carriers. The cranes' loading capacity is 71 tn, while boxes can be lifted 48 m above the pier.
There're now six STSes operational at the port, the two new ones having replaced one dismantled 30 years' old Panamax crane.
The newest equipment is part of Koper's container handling investment, aimed at increasing the overall capacity up to 1.3 mln TEU/year by 2020 (last year, a total of 844,758 TEU were handled, an increase by 7% year-on-year). Recently, new Rubber Tyred Gantry as well as Rail Mounted Gantry cranes were deployed across the storage and railway areas. A depot will be set up, too, providing container cleaning and repair services, as well as reefer pre-trip inspection. Additionally, the container terminal’s quay wall is to be extended by 100 m up to 700 m, making it possible to take care of two container ships of the biggest class simultaneously.
